Kate and Barbara - re size of photos. It's the width that counts, length doesn't matter! ;)

I don't think it's anything to do with your photobucket size, this Forum reduces the width of all photos to between 575 and 585 pixels irrespective of original width size and it disregards the length. I don't know why, previous forums allowed us up to 800 pixels wide or even 900 for a while. Maybe it's to reduce capacity.

So you can resize your PB photos to the width you would like people to see them when they click to enlarge. A portrait pic will look bigger on the page literally because it's longer than it's wide - the forum will reduce it less because it's concentrating on the width size not the length size. I usually make my landscape photos 900 x 675 pixels which are reduced down to 64% width. Portrait photos I usually make 700 pixels wide which are reduced down to around 82% width. And my collages I try to make long and thin because they appear bigger that way.

So you have a choice - if you want to give people the option of seeing your pic bigger, just do it the size you want and let them click to see it enlarged. If you want it to appear in your post without being reduced by the Forum, whether portrait or landscape, make the width less than around 570 pixels.

btw 1 - yes, when you downsize you lose some pixels then when you upsize they stay lost, the pic is just stretched to the new larger size and the quality is not so good. You are better to always save the PB downsized pic as a copy then you have the option of going back to the original. I've always felt that the Forum method of reducing size does reduce the quality, especially the sharpness and intensity of colour.

btw 2 - yes I do have the option to click and enlarge pics :)

Here's a berry collage which as an experiment I intentionally made an acceptable forum width - 570 pixels but very long - 1800 pixels. It should hopefully appear without being reduced. edit - yes it did! :D

Sue, I just love your brilliant sun going down, and Barbara, your Severn bore, with its reflections in the water.

Last night we had another weak sunset, so I did some research! Here's what I found - you probably know this already.

    What makes a sunset

When the sun is directly overhead, its rays travel 93 million miles through space and then penetrate the atmosphere, a 20-mile thick layer of air that coats the planet. When the sun is rising or setting, it sits on the horizon at a low angle, which causes it to be filtered through much more of the earth's atmosphere. When the sun is sitting just above the horizon, its rays penetrate about 12 times more atmosphere than at midday.

As sunlight passes through thick layers of atmosphere at sunrise and sunset, purple, blue and green light waves collide with air molecules and are scattered away before they reach the ground. Yellows, oranges and reds all have longer wavelengths, and are not affected as much by air molecules. Because of this, it's possible to see sunrises and sunsets of any variation of the three colors.

Intensely colorful sunsets are driven almost entirely by airborne microscopic particles large enough to block yellow and orange light waves. Sulfur from man-made pollution and released from ocean organisms, ash from volcanic eruptions, and soot from wildfires are among the many particles large enough to scatter away yellow and orange light waves, setting sunsets aflame by allowing only red light to reach the eye.

This also explains why late afternoon light is more golden, the blue and green light waves are blocked.

So I suppose I can claim that "up north" we have a cleaner atmosphere with less pollution, giving us fewer intense red sunsets. B)

Here are my 2 yellowish orangish sunsets from last night

Gorgeous sunsets, Joanna, and yours too Anne -Maarit, I love the silhouettes of pine trees and other plants against the sky and the reflections in the water. And the silhouettes of palm trees too Karin.

Well it's pouring with rain today but last night it stayed clear enough for me to get a few shots, not what I call real sunsets but just the sky getting pinker as it got darker.
